TOLL-GATES.
At the meeting of the Waimate West County Council on Thursday the question of the abolition of toll-gates was brought up, following on a telegram received from Mr Wilkinson in reference to the Toil-Gate Abolition Bill, advising that the second reading was fixed for July 25, and suggesting that a deputation representive of Egmont, Manaia, Kaponga and Waimate wait on the Minister. He also suggested that popular petitions be circulated immediately in all districts favoring abolition.
The Town Clerk, Kaponga, wrote advising that his Board considered the Abolition Bill and regretted that (they could not see their way to co-operate in this matter.
The question was taken in committee, and on resuming it was reported £hat a motion was carried to the effect that this Council do all in their power to abolish toll-gates and to assist Mr Wilkinson with his Bill, and that a committe be appointed to go to Wellington \bo interview the Minister. Crs. McPhUlips and Bridge were appointed. The chairman reported that Mr WiL kinson was having a petition printed in Wellington, and promised to send copies to the Council. A committee of three was set up to arrange for procuring i signatures throughout the district.
