RIOTS IN PORTUGAL

MADRID, May 26. A riot in Lisbon, lasting for four ■days, was due to syndicalists and the •working classes resenting the sudden increase in the prices of bread and potatoes. Provision shops were sacked, including 43 belonging to Spaniards. ;Serious damage was caused to private property. The riots were suppressed, under martial law, by the energetic action of the troops. The casualties amounted to 25 killed and 150 wounded. Three hundred ar- ! rests were made, of whom eighty were •women. It is stated that the Monarchical party was in no wise responsible, and that the riot had no political signifi■cance, being due solely to economic distress.
