The troubles of the Arahura, on which an explosion was caused by benzine tumes when off .East Cape on Sunday morning, were not, it seems, completed when she arrived in Napier On Monday afternoon -the crew refused to sail unless all the gasoline which had caused tho explosion had been removed, and this was done by lighters and by means or the railway on the breakwater wharf. A spark from the Harbor Board's railway engine ignited three trucks of gasoline in the progress of being unloaded, inese were burnt on the wharf and 339 cases were destroyed. The wind prevented the Arahura from catching fire The driver and stoker of the engine pluckily kept to their work and pulled the burning mass clear of the buildings. The Auckland Star states that, provided there are enough ships available to clear the cool stores in Auckland of the accumulated stocks of butter, cheese, and meat by July the positiin according to the opinion of som c business men, will not be very serious. The , reason for this is that the supply coming ,to hand is now about equal to the demand. From now on till August, when me batter season opens, supplies will, as usual, fall off during the winter months. For these reasons, provided boats can clear the freezers by August, the position should not b e very serious, as far as primary products are concerned. Word has been received by Mr and Mrs C. Pollard, of Kapuni, that their son, Rifleman C. H. Pollard, was wounded in France on the Bth inst. j A deputation from the council of the J Public Service Association waited on Sir James Allen in Wellington, and discussed with him the subject of the cost of living. The deputation suggested that the Government should commandeer sufficient food for the use of the public, and sell it at reasonable rates, also that, if necessary, it should take over farms and other means of production, and work them during the war.
