DEPARTING SOLDIERS
I Those recently home here on final leave included Private J. Candy, who is going to the front with the 22nd Reinforcements (infantry). Private Candy is a brother of Mr H. E. Candy, 'of Manaia, and is an old resident of the town, having been successfully enj gaged in the land agency business. On Thursday evening a number of friends visited him at his residence for the purpose of bidding him farewell, and a very enjoyable social .evening was spent. The Rev. C. Blair presented the guest with a camera to take abroad with him, a small reminder of his friends' esteem. In making the presentation the speaker paid a tribute to the good qualities of the recipient, 1 and of the faithful and willing work that had been done by Private Candy i in the past in connection with various I local activities, particularly in connection with the church to which he had ■ been attached, and where his staunch support was and would be. greatly missed by his associate®. i Prior to their departure on Friday morning, Mr A. H. Guy, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, presented I Privates Candy and Kirk with wristlet watohes as tokens of the esteem and good wishes of the residents of the district. The recinients expressed their appreciation of the gifts, and their intention to endeavor to continue to merit the good opinion of their well--1 wishers and to prove worthy of their ( predecessors in the field.
