CHRISTMAS NIGHT PICTURES.

— _<i DISCUSSED BY BOROUGH , COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Borough Coancil last night an application was received from the manager of the South Taranaki , Amusement Co., Ltd., for pc: missioii, to show suitable pictures on Christmas Inignt. Cr Harding moved that the" request be granted, provided the entertainment did' not clash with the time of the church services. Cr Goodwin seconded. An amendment was moved by Cr (Stevens, that the request b& granted without any reservation, with the exception that the programme" be first submitted to the Council for approval. Cr" Hayton seconded,' and smd this was^ the course followed when a similar' application was before the Council , last year. The Mayor'said he did not intend to give a silent vote on this matter. He was opposed to granting permission,as he was decidedly of the opinion that the wishes of those members of the community who regarded Christmas Day as sacred should be respected. Cr Goodwin stated that he also respected the wishes of these people, but he also r respected the wishes- of those who desired to go to the pictures on Christmas night,-and personally he did not see any harm in this. The programme should be approved by the Council before being shown. Something could be learned from good pictures, he added. Cr Morrissey said that, as on previous occasions, he would oppose granting the permission asked tor. People nad sis nights in the week in which to see pictures, and it was unnecessary to. give an/entertainment on either 'Christinas night- or Good Friday. The entertainments on these particular nights, he maintained, were hot given for the benefit''of the public. Cr Bone also ; opposed the motion, stating, that they should try and keep Christmas Day as sacred as possible.Cr Stevens, replying to Cr ivforrissey, said he knew for a fact that the enter T taihment at the. Opera House on last Christmas night was. given for the benefit Naf the public, and .that no one could have taken exception to the class of pictures that were shown. . Cr Harding said that pictures rarely appealed to> him personally, but he supported, the -motion, on the principle that they should not dictate to the people and say they shall not go to a , place of entertainment on a particular night; it was a. matter in which the public should' be allowed to please themselves. The.Mayor: What about Sunday? Cr Harding: That is different.Cr Burrell suppoi^ed the motion. He considered that the Council should not dictate to the people whether they shall' go to .the pictures or not. A section of the community seemed to be afraid that if the picture houses were opened on Christmas night the churches ,wr..uld be empty. ' Cr Bone: Oh, no! We will get them all the same. ■." . , Cr Hayton said he would support the application being granted, although br-did not. subscribe to some of the arguments advanced in favor of the application. The motion was withdrawn in favor of the amendment, which was put to the meeting and carried. A division was not. asked for. The programme has to he submitted to the Council for approval.
