A very well-known citizen of Wellington, Mr \V. I. fcnortt, died on Sunday.

A London cable reports the death of Admiral Sir Wm. Kennedy, wno was Captain Halsey's guest on ins er-uise in the New "Zealand m 1913.

Mr jW. Gray, director of technical education for the Taranaki Education Board, conferred with the members of the Technical School Committee last night. He is staying in town to-day.

Private advice has come to hand of the death from wounds, received in the Somme battle, of Lieut. Leonard M. Liardet, son of Mr and Mrs H. L. Liardet, of Wellington, and formerly of Stratford.

A Wellington telegram states that it is announced that Mr John Cuilen, Commissioner of Police, will retire from the public service on November 23. His time for retirement on the age qualification was due in May last, but he was induced to carry on for another six months at the request of the Government.

Mr T. R. Surrey, of Hawera, has been appointed stock buyer for the N.Z. Refrigerating Company, who have built large works at Wanganui, and have in addition works in other parts of the Dominion.

At the meeting of the Park Tennis Club last evening a soldier's money-bel L was presented to W. Ihle, secretary ox the club, wiio is shortly going into camp. Members' spoks in appreciation of Mr Ihle's services.

At a meeting of the executive of the St. John Ambulance and Red Cross Society, held at the depot in Hallenstein's Buildings yesterday, a vote of sympathy was passed tor Miss Olive Turton in her late sad bereavement. Her resignation as superintendent and treasurer, and also thaffc of Mrs B. C. Bennett as secretary were accepted with very much regret.

Mr J. D. Hunter, who has been for- some years on the staff of the Bank of New Zealalid, Hawera, has received transfer on promotion to Ohura. He left for his new position to-day.

Mr G. A. Burgess, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Hawera, has received au v ?ee that his son,, Cecil, who is now acting-sergeant, has been wounded in the thigh. His many friends will wish him a speedy re^coverv.

Previous to commencing the business at the public meeting of ladies yesterday in connection with the Wounded Soldiers' Club, a vote of condolence was passed to Mrs and Miss Turton, and to the Hawera relatives of those .larcr"wno had fallen at the front during the past few weeks. The motion was carried in silenca, all present standing.

At the meeting of the Hawera Technical School Committee . last evening it was decided, on the motion of Mr Strack, seconded v>y Mr Dixon, to forward a letter of sympathy to.Mr A. Reid, a memßer of the committee, in the bereavement he had sustained in the death, of his son, Corporal A. Reid, while on active service. The motion was carried in silence.

Private S. W-. Kelsen, of the loth Reinforcements, writing to his father in Normanby, gives some interesting particulars of the journey, during which he says that he put in time on a shift every day trimming and firing, for the .sake of exercise and health. day there is, he says, fun in the" shape of boxing, skipping, tugsrof-war- and blindfold boxing, in which there is heaps of amusement. After they left New Zealand the weather improved, and for the greater part of the journey they had lovely calm and warm weather.

The very large and representative gathering of settlers and townspeople who attended to pay their last respects to the memory of the late Mr J. A. Turton showed in what high respect he was held by all' classes. People attended from all parts of Taranaki. Beautiful wreaths were sent by friends from all over the Dominion and by various institutions with which he was' connected. The service was held in ht. Mary's Church, the Itev. C. H. Grant Cow-en" officiating. The church was nearly filled. During the service _ two hymns were sung, Mrs King presiding at the organ. At the close she played the Dead March in Saul, the congregation standing. " j Mr and Mrs J. Gilmour, of Manaia,' nave just received advice from the Minister of Defence that their only son Corporal A. J. Gilmour, died of v cunds on October sth. Mr and Mrs Gilmour are very well-known and respected settlers of Manaia, and hosts of friends all over-Taranaki will .ieenly sympathise with them in their sorrow. Arthur Gilmour was only about twenfcy-one and was esteemed very highly by i oople of the town and district. He was educated at JNelson College, and had been stu-ly-ing at Dunedin University before he enlisted. He was keenly interested in sports, and had been a member of the JVaimate Football Club and Manaia Cricket Club. Many friends will sincerely regret to hear that he^has gone out m the great war, giving his life as so many of our best ar.e doing for their country.
