THE WESTERN FRONT.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S MESSAGE
WELLINGTON, June 9. The High Commissioner reports from London on June Bth, at 4 p.m.:— On the left of the Metise there has l>een intermittent bombardment of our second lines. On the right bank intense artillery fighting has occurred in the region of Thiaiimont and Douaumont. After seven days of sanguinary* combat against assaulting troops renewed ceaselessly, the garrison of Fort Vaux reached the limit of enduraice, and was unable to prevent the enemy from occupying the work, which has been completely ruined by the furious bombardment. We hold the immediate approaches and the trenches to the left and right of the fort, before which all enemy attacks have been "broken by our fire. The night was relatively calm on the rest of the front, except at Hartmannsweilerkopf, where very active artillery fighting has been maintained.
