Colonel Mackay, speaking from a purely military standpoint, as a result of careful personal observations at Liverpool and aasual camps, states that he can emphatically say an unmistakeable improvement in the conduct and efficiency of the troops has been - disclosed during the short* period 8 o^clock closing has been operative. It was clearly evident that all responsible officers unanimously favored 8 o'clock. The Epsom entries total 179, compared with 214 last year. The Metropolitan entries total 172, compared with 187. - Both include Determination, Di Gama and Nones. The Melbourne Cup entries total 262, compared with 254. Other entries are Unavailable.

The Warhambool by-election resulted in the Liberals 'retaining the seat. Six o'clock closing was a prominent issue, and obtained a strong majority. BRISBANE, June 6. The Wool Brokers' Association cabled the Imperial authorities requesting relaxation of the wool embargo in favor of France and Italy. The secretary states that he cannot understand why Japan is favored and not other Allies.
