Clemenceau, says he is astonished that •journalists Should allow themselves to be irypnotised by the heaviness of the battle losses." The German fleet came out with two objects: Firstly to destroy the ships supplying Russia with food via Archangel and Kola, and re"turning grain laden, also to destroy Kola and establishments at Archangel, which operation would have isolated .Russia and reduced her to extremities; -secondly, the Fleet .wished to cover the «xit of the Wiesbaden and Elbing, which had been specially equipped as m_ commerce raiders, with huge coal caparity, and hoped to reach the South Atlantic and Pacific to surpass the Emden's successes.
