The Star. Delivered every evening by 6 o'clock in Hawera, Manaia, Normanby, Okaiawa, Eltham, Mangatoki, Kaponga, Awatuna, Opunake, Otakeho, Manutahi, Alton, Hurleyville, Patea, Waverley. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 1916. THE LOSS OF KITCHENER.
A stunning blow comes to-day in the distressing news of the loss of Lord Kitchener, the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. He was oh his way to Russia with his staff and some members of the Munitions Committee, and off .the Orkneys H.M.S. Hampshire* on which the party-were travelling, either struck a mine or was torpedoed by a submarine. It is beyond all doubt, in the opinion cf the Com-mander-in-Chief of the Navy, that all on board were lost. It is a catastrophe to lose such a man at such a time. Extended comment would be out of place. It is fittest to -suffer and be silent, bat still in full confidence that the nation he has served so well will at his tragic death derive from his life the inspiration to be selfcontained, strong, immovable.
