INDIFFERENCE
ATTACKS OF "BRIEF DURATION
ENEMY OUT OF SIGHT IN FIVE MINUTES.
(Received Feb. 22, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 21. The people of Walmer were enjoying their Sunday walks when suddenly the whirr of an aeroplane a thousand feet up in the sky was heard, and instantly there was a cry of "Take •cover." Some followed this advice, but many -continued watching the aeroplane in ■contemptuous indifference. A deafening series of explosions took place near iihe church, which shook the building | find caused a momentary <pailse in the •singing of the Te Deum, bivt then the •service was continued without a sign of panic. In many houses not a pane of glass was left unbroken. Curiosity was the prevailing feeling, and eager search was made for bomb pieces. Several missiles fell into the sea at Lowestoft. One bomb penetrated a bedroom, where it exploded, and another blew out the windows of the Primitive Methodist Chapel, where there was a crowded congregation, which, though greatly alarmed, left without disorder, and the service was abandoned. Three bombs dropped 'harmlessly in the vicinii^y of the gasworks. The attack lasted a few minutes. Clouds enabled the seaplanes to reach "Walmer undetected. British aeroplai.es were quickly in the air, but ■owing t* tho enemy's runaway tactics there was lifltle chance of an effective ■counter-attack, the attackers being out -of sight five minutes after they dropped the 'first bomb. One blew a boy, who was walking on ihe roadway, almost to pieces, and terribly injured a -man standing nearby.
