Lady Williams (widow of Sir Joshua Williams) aaid one of her daughters are returning to New Zealand shortly. Miss Helen Williams has already left London.

Mr D. Taylor, who for two years was a member of the staff of the primary department of the Hawera District High School, hlis received an appointment at the Feilding High School. At last night's meeting of the School Committee the headmaster placed on record his appreciation of Mr Taylor's services while at the school. Miss Bourke, formerly on the staff, has succeeded Mr Taylor.

Miss Bates, of tlje teaching staff of the Hawera District High School, has been granted leave of absence owing .-o illness. Mrs Wilson, relieving, teacher, is temporarily filling tho vacancy.

Among those who were mentioned in Lord French's despatches for service in connection with the battle of Loos was Major-General James M. Babington, \yho was on the Headquarters Staff. Major-General Babington for some time after the Boer War was Commandant of the New Zealand Forces.

Sir Henry Lucy, after 35 years' service, lias .retired from tlie staS of Punch. Sir Henry is 7"0 years of age. After a long experience on London newspaper stati's he joined. Mr J. E. Fitzgerald, of Wellington,1 accompanied by Mrs Fitzgerald, arrived in Hawera from Wellington by motor yesterday, and is at Hookas Hotel. Mr Fitzgerald, a member of the Wellington Cuy Council, is combining business with' pleasure on this visit, and called on the Mayor during the day. Major McXaught. Hawera. who has been group commander in the Taranaki district for the past twelve months, has been advised that he is to be transferred to Palraerston North, when he will take over the sick and wounded department for all the areas in the Wellington military district. During his residence in Hawera Major McXaught has proved himself to be an efficient officer, and has become very popular with the citizens. He is, to be succeeded by Lieutenant Cosgrove, X.P.S.C., who will take over the command as from March 1. Lieut Cosgrove has arrived in Hawera. The Taranaki Herald announces the death of the Rev. H. .J. Lewis, which took place oil Friday. Mr Lewis, who had recently been in bad health, retired from the active ministry of the Presbyterian Church six veors ago. He came to tlie Dominion about 30 years ago, and occupied charges at Nelson, Uunediiv, Core, Woodvilie and Paeroa. Since residing in New Plymouth Mr Lewis has acted ivs relieving minister on tn;ui\ occasions when his nestlth permitted.. He leaves a widow,, two sons and three daughters,
