LONDON, Jan. 7. Le Petit Journal says that when Italy was about to sign the London pact, agreeing to help the Allies by going into Albania, Austria and Germany endeavored to prevent her, and offered her a« separate peace and the whole of, the Trentino, Isonzo, and Carso; including Gorizia, _ Grado, Valona, an autonomous Albania, concessions in Asia Minor, and the conseryation of her colonies. Italy unhesitatingly rejected the offers. A correspondent at Salonika states that the generals, commanding the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Greek Army Corps have informed the Government that they- will be unable^ to restrain the men 'if the Turks and* Bulgars appear. One brigade mutinied at Kavala, demanding war or demobilisation. The officers urged the men to vote for the Government, but the men replied: ,"We will vote with'our rifles, and against you first." ' Cabinet-is quarrelling, M. Rallis and M. Cohdounotis fiercely resisting the compact with Bulgaria. Kino- Constantine stated on December 27 that he believed the situation had changed and that ultimate victory had slipped from German hands, though he" expected Germany would be abl^ to save her prestige. Queen Sophia is considerably depressed owing, to recent"letters from l^er. pister Charlotte, the Princess of Saxe-Meiningen. Greek opinion is that Egypt is Germany's objective. The Tim ps Toronto correspondent says that 55 Japanese in Vancouver are forming a Japanese; battnl:on for oversea service. More than five hundred applications have been received elsewhere in the province.
