HOSPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

DISCUSSED BY THE BOARD

A special meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board was held this morning to consider the question of plans for the proposed improvements to the hospital, which the Board has had under consideration for some time.

Recently Mr T. A. Winks and the Board's architect (Mr J. A. Duffill) went to Wellington to interview the officers of the Health Department with reference to the Board's proposals. Mr Winks submitted a written report of the interview with Dr. Valintine (Inspector-General) who subsequently handed the deputation over to Dr Prengley, Chief Health Officer, to con, sider the plans. The report stated, inter alia: "Dr. Frengley had a thorough grasp of the requirements of hospital accommodation .and soon eiaeS iup what we wanted, and after recommending a few minor alterations, practically agreed to the plans as outlined. He also described the mode of procedure to procure what we wanted, such as that the Board submit a formal application to the Department as to what it intended to do, together with tracings of ground plans of the portions of the buildings required to be altered and rebuilt. The Department will approve or rejec-t these, and if approved, will then submit the proposals to the "Minister in charge for his formal approval; then the Board will receive pound for pound subsidy for the money" spent. On our return to Hawera I went fully into the finances of the Board with our-secre-tary, and I do not anticipate any difficulty in that direction, as we have practically £2000 in view by the end of September, 19T5, 'with -sufficient -money coming in to carry on the general work until the end of the year, without running into debt or jeopardising our position in any way, which 1 think should be satisfactory to the Board. I append the following statement of finance as it appears to me:—Expenditure: Theatre, £929; nurses' cottage, £525; domestic 'quarters, £100; Turriiture, £TSO; total, £1704. Receipts*. 'Contributions and subsidy, £1277; barik balance, '£700; in "hand September 30th, '£1977, leaving a balance of £2561^0 yet come in by way of contributions and subsidies, plus any revenuo from patients' fees, to carry on general working ■expenses to ""March 31.

Mr Marx, in moving the adoption of the report, said the "Board's delegate and the architect "had done very good work, and were to "be congratulated. The motion was seconded by Mr Linn and carried.

Mr Linn moved that {he "Board's architect prepare ground -plans of the proposed additions, to he forwarded to the "Wellington authorities for their approval.

This was seconded fry "Mr' Bridge and earrie'd." .

The 'Chairman proposer! a hearty vote of thanks to" IVfr Winks and Mr Duffill for the services Tendered oby them to the Board wliile in Wellington. It was very gratifying to know that they had been so successful.

The other members present endorsed the chairman's remark's, and the motion, which was seconded T>y "Mr McV ■Uon, was carried unanimously.
