OTAKEHO.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
AN OBSTRUCTION
Some weeks ago the Wairaate West County Council had a waggon load of timber conveyed to the western end of the Otakeho bridge, on the main road; the timber has been used for the re-decking of the bridge, and the waggon remains. This is a source of great danger to the travelling public, as frequently accidents have been narrowly averted. A few evenings ago this waggon was. drawn on to the bridge, and had it not been for some pedestrians discovering it a very serious accident would have occurred, as whilst these people were removing the obstacle a motor-car, driven by a wellknown resident, dashed on the bridge, and only the promptitude of those removing the vehicle prevented a serious accident. Complaints have been numerous, and I hope those responsible will > have this danger removed.
HALL COMMITTEE
A meeting of, the Hall Committee was held on Monday eveniag for the purpose of electing a new secretary for the committee, as the post has been rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr-O. M. Young, who has received a N.C.O.'s commission in the Ninth Reinforcements, and is leaving for Trentham on Monday next. Mr Le Fleming, chairman of the committee, occupied the chair, and spoke of the committee's regret in losing Mr* Young's services, yet congratulated him on his appointment, and wished him the best of good luck in his work. After several members had spoken in a similar strain, Mr Young proposed Mr F. Walk's as secretary to the committee, and the proposal was carried unanimously.
PERSONAL
The Chairman also spoke of the connmittee's sincere grief on hearing of the death of Mr Horace Whittington at the Dardanelles, which had brought home to all who knew him the grim reality of war and its disregard for character and manliness. The Chairman moved a vote of sympathy and condolence with the relatives in their great loss; and also that the secretary be authorised to write to Mrs Eaves conveying the committee's sympathy to her in the loss of her brother. This motion was carried in silence, all members standing.
It may perhaps interest a number ef people to hear that Mr J. D. Bashford, formerly of the Commercial Hotel, Manaia, and recently farming at Otakeho, is now in camp at Trentham in the mounted section of the Ninth Reinforcements.
