SUBMARINE WARFARE
GERMAN NEWSPAPER OPINION
(Received Jrine, 18,. 2.30 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, June 17. The American Note created a deep impression in Germany. The Cologne Gazette has abandoned its truculent tone and admits that it " would be imbecile for Germany to desire another enemy; nevertheless the torpedoing of merchant ships cannot < cease until Britain relinquishes the economic blockade. The Gazette falls foul of the Lbial Anzieger, which does not share the belief that the British blockade is Tile, and points out that Germany would be very glad to' employ similar tactics against Britain. The Kreuz Zeitung is similarly indignant at the Lokal Anzieger's candid admissions, and says: There must be no weakening of the weapon of submarine warfare. The American question has given, rise to bitter newspaper, controversy, some =■ suggesting that yon Jago should be replaced by an Imperial Board to conduct foreign policy, while others desire to re- « call yon Bulow to power.
