N.Z. FARMERS UNION.
TARANAKI EXECUTIVE MEETING
A meeting of the Taranaki provincial executive 01 the N.Z. Farmers' Union was held this morning. There were present: Messrs A. E .Washer (vicepresident), E. Maxwell, R. Lambie, S. Barrow, B. Orr, J. Swindlehurst, and H; Hodge. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr R. Dunn), the vice-president acted as chairman of the meeting. .
The vice-president briefly extended a warm welcome to the new members/ who; he?was sure, would do good work on the executive. At the same time the absence of many old faces, particularly that of Mr J. Thomson, who had been a useful member of the executive for many years, caused regret. He moved: "That this executive place on record its appreciation of the services, of Air J. Thomson during his long connection with the executive, and also places on record its appreciation of the services of the members who have retired ■ from the executive.
Mr R. Lambie, who seconded the motion, spoke eulogistically of Mr Thomson's work. He was sorry that Mr Thomson was leaving the district. He also regretted that the executive had lost the services of other valuable members. Mr Swindlehurst also added, his tribute to Mr Thomson's service to the essei&ivei, V * The motion was carried unanimously. The Dominion secretary (Mr Jack) forwarded a copy of the revised rules of the union, which were approved. A letter was received from Mr R. Dunn (Auroa) thanking the Provincial Conference for its resolution of sympathy, which lie appreciated. He was progressing as well as could be expected, under the circumstances. The Dominion' secretary advised that the annual TDominion Conference would commence in Wellington on July 27. Remits should reach Wellington early in June.
The provincial secretary (Mr J. B. Sim) said the remits had been.,sent to the Dominion secretary. Reference was made by the members to the valuable work being carried out by Mr R. Browne in ' agricultural instruction, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Hodge, seconded by Mr Barrow, that Mr Browne be invited to give a lecture in Hawera upon 'agriculture, top-dressing, etc., and that all farmers in Taranaki be also invited, through the press, to be present; the chairman and secretary to arrange with Mr Browne as-to the place and date of the meeting.
A telegram was received from the president asking the executive to try and induce ~the branches to take up the wounded soldiers' fund. His cheque for £5 would follow.
The vice-president said that, if he remembered rightly, something was*, said two or three meetings ago as to farmers giving stock to be sold by auction, the proceeds to be devoted to this fund. This was a very good time in which to push the fund. (Left Sitting.)
