LONDON, May 31. Reuters Washington correspondent says there is profound disappointment at Germany's reply, and the situation ia Considered grave. New York newspapers say that Germany's reply is of a temporising nature and insincere.
The Heraldi says: Germany proposes / delay, while reserving the •right to Black Hand us. The United States ■W>lds a brief for civilisation, and is *lot to be diverted from her duty by quibbling. ■ •■ The Philadelphia Public Ledger says ; "the reply is a confession of avoidance, and Germany must be brought to her sffloses. The United States cannot • argne^ when _ the question involves 'Americans being brutally. sacrificed by ;■'■* Oovernment ■ which repudiates law : arid humanity. The Chicago Herald says the reply not onjy does not relieve, but actually increases the tension.
The Providence Journal says that xwless Germany accepts the demands ajpthing will be left except to sever diplomatic relations.
