HAWERA BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Hawera Bowling Club was held in Keen's Rooms last evening. There was a large attendance of members; the president (Mr W. A. Parkinson) was in the chair. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET.

The committee report said, iater alia, they have pleasure in presenting the balance-sheet for the year, which, it will be seen, is of a satisfactory character, for the indebtedness has been reduced by the year's finance from £201 5s 5d to £145 4s Id. The green was in capital order during the season. From a playing point of view the Season was satisfactory. We have had most pleasant games with other clubs in the Centre, with all of whom our relations are most cordial. "We regret that we have not had more matches with the clubs in the northern division, and must hope for an improvement in this respect during next season. A rink from the club, consisting of Messrs Maslin, Parkinson, Henson and C. E. Hollard (skip) won. the Shield at the Taranaki Centre tournament, and anothen rink, Messrs Hodge, Tong, J. Syme and R. Hicks, won their section. The club is in every respect on a very good footing, and may reasonably look forward to continuing to be one of the most.useful, as well as prosperous, institutions of the town. . '

The balance-sheet showed that during the jear the indebtedness of the ciub was reduced by £56. The income from membership subscription was £172, rent tennis club £15, other receipts £26 (including £8 15s for the Belgian fund). The expenditure was £158. The, principal it^msweye labor £64, interest £12, rates and»* repayments / tp: Borough Council £16 10s, soil for green obtained from Wanganui £12, Belgian relief fund £8 15s, printing (mostly for new rules) £7, various supplies and subscriptions, telephone and Centre, insurance, etc., accounting for the balance, Against/the 1 deb^t balance of £145 at tl^e eoß\ of the year the valuej of the -qlub's property s assessed for taxation purposes, was £545, and plant and implements were set down as worth £10.

The President, in.moving the adop- D tion of' the r.eport and balance-sheet, d said he had pleasure hi, congratulating I 1 the members upon the club having had ® a successful year, and upoti ti.e iniprov- d ed position as disclosed by the balance- *< sheet. The revenue had been very good, c and the expenditure, although it had P been heavier than visual, had not been extravagant, and some. £20 of it would not be recurrent. The club was getting into a position enabling it to consider making material improvements to the pavilion, but probably members would l 1 prefer not to do anything for. another * year. He referred to various matters a which it Mould be desirable to discuss, 8 such as the mat question and the c banner competitions. n Mr F. G. Kimbell seconded the motion. The. club was on a very sound footing, and this was in a great measure due to the excellent work of the officers and committee. • 1 The motion was agreed to. c ELECTION OF OFFICERS. c The following was the result:— * President, Mr \V. A. Parkinson (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs E. B. v Bates and G.#Syme (re-elected); secretary, Mr A. Robertson (re-elected^; committee: Messrs J. Gray, S. Adamson, L. S. Tan-ant, C. E. Hollard, R. Tait, J. P. Keen, W. Grant, W. Robertson, C. Robb; delegates to the centre, the president, Mr Bates, and the secretary; auditor, Mr D. G. c Smart. " BANNER MATCHES. The president referred to the Banner. < competition, and said there was a! j general feeling that it was interfering; j somewhat with inter-club matches, and < that a change would have to be made. \ The matter would no doubt come be- - fore the centre annual meeting, andj j the delegates to the centre would bej ■ glad of suggestions which could bo - submitted on behalf of the Hawera : Club. The president of the centre, Mr : Perm, had" suggested that the clubj winning the banner should hold it j subject to challenge from any other club, but as yet no detailed scheme had been proposed. Mr J. P. Keen suggested that the banner should be competed for simi- j larly to that of the Rugby football shield. The rinks should not be less than three rinks; four rinks should be> ample. Mr A. Black moved, that the delegates make the best arrangements possible. This was seconded by Mr J. Qumn. An amendment vyas moved by Mr J. Gray, that the incoming committee consider the matter, and make recommendations to the delegates. Mr J. P. Keen seconded. Mr Black withdrew his motion in favor cf Mr Gray's proposition, which was agreed 60. THE RULE OF THE MAT. The president said the executive of the Dominion Bowling Association had referred the "two feet on the mat rule' to the .centres for consideration, and the centres had passed it on to the clubs for their opinion. The present rule had met with a good deal of objection throughout the Dominion. The Hawera Club's rule was that the foot from which pressure came should be wholly on the mat when the bowl was 'being delivered, and in the interests of the green it was a good rule. After a short discussion, a motion was carried, on the proposition cf Messrs Curtis and Robb, that the club' is of the opinion that the rule providing for two fest being on the mat be abolished, and that the incoming committee consider a recommendation as to what should take its place. THE COMPETITIONS. There was a discussion with reference to improving the playing off of the competitions, and several suggest tions were received for future working. Finally the whole question was re- | mitted to the Match Committee. I VOTES OF SYMPATHY. Reference was' made to the serious illness of Mr G. Syme. , Mr Syrne was one of the founders of the club, and one of those who took the initiative in securing the present fine green, and all were sorry he could not be with them that evening. It was resolved (Par-kinson^-Tait) to forward a letter ex-Di-essing the club's sympathy and its hopes for his speedy recovery. A similar motion was passed in respprt of Mr S. A. Breach, who is also laid up.

BOWLER AT THE -FRONT. The president mentioned that it had been suggested by message from Mr Syme that the club convey greetings to one of it* members, Captain McDonnell, serving at the front. H<? moved that greetings be conveyed to the absent member, wishing him a safe and speedy return to Hawera. Mr W. Henson seconded the motiop, which was carried. COMPLIMENTARY. Votes of thanks to the outgoing officers, to Messrs Yv. and A. Robertson (Green ComraitteeV and to the ladies for giving afternoon teas, and to Mr Keen for the iise of his rooms, concluded the meeting.
