ELECTRIC OMNIBUSES.
A NEW DEPARTURE
A new departure is now being made, by tne Edison Accumulator C^fnSny whose headquarters are in London, in drf™ f P6 X{ .P r°™ing omnibuses Jiiven by electric motors which take their energy trom ,batteries carried on board A detailed description of tour of these omnibuses, which have been supplied to York Corporation! and the last of which has just been put mto service, shows that when these vehicles were completed they were sent down to York by road, a distance of about .'230 miles. An average easy speed of some nine wiles an hour was maintained throughout, and the journey incidentally was a most satisfactory test. The average output from the battery was 120 watt-hours per ton mile. The omnibuses ar.e singledeck vehicles, and each seats 22 passengers. One motor is used, and the transmission to the. driving wheels is by chains. The battery consists of 64 tdison cells with a capacity of 300 volts. These steel and nickel"cells are giving excellent results compared with the old lead types. The electric omnibus indeed requires careful consideration in these days when petrol is so expensive, and when, on the other hand electric energy tends to' become cheaper instead of dearer.
