THE BATTLE ON THE SAN

FIERCEST OF THE WAR

THREE MILLION MEN ENGAGED

RIVER FLOODED TVTIH GERMAN

BLOOD

(Received May 27, 10.30 a.m.)

LONDON, May 26

The Petrograd correspondent of the London Daily News says that the battle on the San is developing into the fiercest of the war. Three million men ar<* attacking and counter-attacking daily along the entire front,

The Kaiser is personally directing operations, and a great flock of German aeroplanes is taking part. The Russians have shot four airmen.

General yon Hindenburg states that the slaughter was due to the solid phalanxes which the Kaiser ordered to cross the river north of Jaroslav.

The Germans hold only 20 miles between Opatoff and Kalomea, and they have been fastened to the right bank owing to the Russian successes above and below them.

The Germans are moving in close order like the troops of ancient Rome, and the San is flooded with German blood.
