THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN

GREAT AUSTRIAN DEFEAT,

ROUTED IN BUKOVINA

EFFECT OF ENEMY'S GALICIAN SUCCESS NULLIFIED.

(Received May 19, 10.30 a.m.) PETROGRAD, May 18. A communique states: The magnitude of the Austrian rout in Bukovina nullifies the success of the enemy in West Galicia. The whole region from the Dniester to the Pruth is now in our power, and the Austrians are fleeing in disorder after a terrible defeat. They have evacuated a powerful position covering a hundred miles, for which they sacrificed an enormous number of lives. The remnants of the army fleeing towards the Pruth were doomed to disaster by a brilliant action of our cavalrv.

The Austrians are making a last stand at Kolomea, which is a vital railway centre, but Czernowitz is already in our possession.
