A WAR TAX.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Your correspondent "The Man Behind the Plough" seems to be giving himself needless sleepless nights; that is, if he is really what he represents himself to be. The Hon. James Allen knows the Latin proverb—"Ex nihilo nihil fit" —from nothing, nothing, comes —as well as most people in v the country, and your correspondent may make his mind easy that the war tax will strike directly where the money is available and from those people who have benefited most by the prices they have received on account -of the war, not forgetting that very large landlord class who receive i 2 or £3 per acre rent from the man behind the plough. REFORMER. : P.S. —Mr Allen has put out a. 'suggestion that those people who, out of their wealth and generosity, and also for the protection of their wealth", have subscribed liberally to the patriotic funds,' should have concessions allowed. Should Mr Allen propose such a thing I fancy he will find a "fly in the amber."
