The enemy was dispersed and partly annihilated by lire and bayonet and charges, and on Wednesday morning began a retreat. During the day 5700 prisoners and several dozens of machine guns were captured. *
Pans reports that a small British squadron has bombarded Westend, in Belgium, successfully. In the region of Neuve Chapelle British troops repulsed two counter-attacks with considerable loss to the enemv In the Champagne district the Allies progressed. In a wood in which the Allies obtained a footing five days ago the enemy defended vigorously, notwithstanding a heavy bombardment and many counter-attacks. Petrograd reports that between the Niemen and the Vistula an extremely obstinate battle was fought in the region of Symno, in the valley of the rivers Omulew- and Orzyc, and in the direction of Przasnyz. In the Carpathians all enemy attacks were repulsed. Austrian units which attempted to entrench after the failure of the night attack were annihilated. In' Eastern Galicia, south of Kijnieff, the I Germans were driven back. j
