KAWERA HOSPITAL BOARD
TO-DAY'S MEETING
To-day's (Thursday) monthly meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board was attended ** Jby Messrs G. TV. Tayler (chairman), J. Marx, R. J. Linn, J. J. Meldrum, J. Phillips, T. A. Winks, C. Hawken, and T. A. Bridge. Leave of absence was granted to Mr E. Bates. The Health Department advised that it was proposed to send Nurse Beetbam to the Wanganui district for about'two months, for the purpose of carrying out the duties of a nurse for the natives in endeavoring to improve the standard of living and health of the Maoris in that district. Should there be any epidemic of infectious disease amongst the Maoris' in the district for which Nurse Beetham is responsible, she will immediately return to the district. ' The chairman said it was satisfactory to know that Nurse Beetham was so highly *appreciated as to be transferred tp a larger district. The matron wrote asking the Board to senousJy consider the question of providing more accommodation for the nurses at the cottage, and to have a larger and up-to-date operating theatre built. "Dr. Thomson's excellent surgical work is of such benefit to the people of Hawera and the surrounding uistrict that it only seems fitiing that money should be spent to improve that I part of the hospital in which iiiis work lis done," observed Miss Broad. The matron also put in a requisition list for the year 1915-16. | It was decided to convene a special meeting of the Board for April • 8 to consider the requests of the inatro.i. ! Health Inspector Gray reported that one case of enteric fever was notified in Hawera borough: five cases of diphtheria and two cases of scarlet fe\er were notified in Eitham borough; two cases of phthisis, and two cases of scarlet ' ferer were notified in liltharu county. The usual precautions were taken in all the cases. Five Ci.ses of chickenpox were notified, lour, in Eltham borough, and one in Eitham county. The matron (Miss Broad) reported that during the month 21 patients were admitted, 14 discharged, while two had died, leaving 24 in the institution. - Nurse Beetham reported that the general condition of the Maori pas1 was fairly good, and that the school children were remarkably clean and tidy. The sickness during the month was chiefly confined to children and infants. The committee appointed to deal* with^ the tenders for supplies recommended that the following be accepted: Groceries, Mr Bullock; bread, Mr Clement; meat, Mr Barrackmgh; coal, Mr Bollard, firewood, Mr Evans; undertaking, Mr Pratt; drapery, left in the hands of the matron and Mr Linn; milk, no tender,, and the matter was left in the hands of the secretary to make the best arrangementl possible. The report was adopted. J .Messrs Linn and Meldon were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. '
