During the next fortnight 109,000 carcases oi mutton will be forwarded for the Imperial Government and it is anticipated that the whole consignment will be sent direct to France. The increased demand for .mutton is unofficially explained as due to the fact that the French Army, whose rations, hitherto included meat once a week, lias, since it has been fighting alongside fjbs British Allies, acquired a desire for more meat, and every endeavor is being made to forward supplies at the earliest moment. Germany again to "acquire that wealth ■without which she could«never have -embarked*', on war. In a few years a new generation which had not experienced the miseries and cruelty of this war would quickly revert to buying in the cheapest market, and steps could not too quickly be taken to produce some form of preferential trading within the Empire. 'Referring to the White Australia policy he said it was a beautiful ideal, but in his opinion was doomed to be an ideal only.
