Australia had 16,079 miles' State-owned and 1,934 privately-owned: South, Africa 7,548 miles State-owned and 545» privately-owned; New Zealandj 2,508"> miles State-owned and .99 privatelyowned ; and Newfoundland 723 miles. State-owned but privately operated, and* 4V privately-owned. India had 32,839 miles of railways,, of which 6,874 were State-owned andi operated, 18,245 State-owned but pri-vately-operated, 1,662 owned and operated by native States, and 1,648 owned: by native States and worked by companies. :' . In 17 other British colonies and protectorates there were 3,525 miles of railways privately-owned. Forty-two foreign States are coveredS' by the return. In 32 of these the rail-J^ ways are owned either wholly or ihr, part by the Governments. The United States is not covered by the return, but it is stated that thecountry has 249,902 miles of railwayin question, all privately-owned and! operated.
