AWATUNA.

(From a Correspondent.)

Awatuna was visited on Tuesday by Messrs McNeill and Rawcliffe, two recently elected members for the Oeo Riding in the Egmont county. These gentlemen had kindly invited ratepayers to meet them and discuss tiieir wants and needs concerning roads, bridges, etc. Unfortunately, few people took advantage of the invitation, .probably because of short notice being given* and I am not aware of tvhat took place. No doubt the chief grievance would be the awful state of the Upper Auroa road. This road is, without exaggeration, one of the worst in the county —a fact testified to by the number of broken gig-springs and axles left behind by gigs that traverse the road X other tian a wXXiZ P aceThe, Auroa road is a boundary olio between the Eltham and Egmont counties, and residents have begun to think that since it is their misfortune to be on a boundary road they must submit to the holes and bumps without hope o? getting redress. However, our two representatives travelled this road, and now; we may hope that before long its present disgraceful state will be a thing of the past. People have sometimes inquired as to what our district has done towards swelling the fund which will help to relieve the sufferings and miseries of the Belgian martyrs However, we have in our midst quite a number of silent, "but very energetic, workers, who have been plying their needles m a vigorous manner for some time past, in an endeavour to provide warm cloth' ing for those who are so much in need oF it. Then, again, people who are in charge of subscription lists in other districts are evidently aware of the generous spirit which moves the Awatuna folk, for they have canvassed this district with good results. A fine three-decker cake is on view at the local store, which the donors are hoping will be the means of raising a considerable sum towards the deserving cause. The ownership of the cake will be decided on Christinas Eve.
