IN THE COURTS
8T TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. A charge, against Stewart Dixon, late president of the Huntly -Miners' union, of misappropriation' of the union's funds was heard in the Magistrate's Court, Huntly, to-day. Ac.cnsed reserved his defence, and was committed for trial.
Walter Gray, who has twice escaped from custody, and was recently arrested in Australia, was brought before the Court to-day, charged with pocket picking. On March 28 last a : man named Pollard, at the refreshment! booth in the cricket ground, missed his purse, and complained to Detective Hammond. Hammond, watching the booth five minutes later, saw Gray, who was moving in the crowd, slip his hand into a man's hip pocket. He arrested Gray, took him into a grocer's shop, and tried to search him. Gray resisted violently, and was handcuffed. Afterwards Pollard's purse was found under the shop counter. In Gray's pocket was a book containing a list of the coming shows, race meetings, sports gatherings, etc., in the Dominion. Gray pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. At the Arbitration Court, in the case of Amelia, Maria White v. The King, an apportionment of damages was made* by consent. Supplicant is the widow of John Theodore White, who, on October Ist, 1914, was killed in an accident on one of the New Zealand troopships. He was in "the employ of the Defence- Department, and the Crown admitted liability for compensation to the amount of. £486 45,. and expenses £11 12s. Deceased was survived by a- widow and five children, two of them under 21 and not selfsupuortino;. With, the consent of the Crown, the Co\irt apportioned half of the compensation to the widow, £200 to the youngest child (a boy of 11 years), and the balance to the younger unmarried daughter, aged 17.
