MORE ABOUT THE EMDEN
(Received Dec. 3, 12.30 a.m.;
MELBOURNE, Dec 3. . The Defence Department supplies further details cf the Sydney-Emden encounter. It appears that the Emden was tak-2n completely by surprise at the presence of a cruiser at Cocos. The Emden had arranged to meet a collier there the day the light oc- \ curved, and when the cruiser appeared she .was apparently taken for the ciuiser Newcastle or Yarmouth. The German did not know she was the Sydney until she revisited the Emden after the fight. The Sydney was j Lib fourteen or fifteen times out of fifteen hundred shells fired. These j were curiously assorted, due to the fact that the Emden had used up every projectile she possessed. The Sydney fired one torpedo at long range and missed. The Sydney's damage is very slight, but the Emdeji suffered considerably from gunfire. Nothing remained of the stern except a few tangled ribs Every gunlayer except one was killed, and scarcely any deck hands remained. The fire drove the remnants of the crew to the forecastle. The Sydney found them dazed with their awful 'expei'ience. An extraordinary case was when one of the Sydnev rs broadsides blew seven men into the sea, bus they were picked up alive. After chasing the collier the Sydne> returned -towing some of the colliers' I boats that had been cut adrift, and these picked up the Germans.
