t; ♦ RE-OPENING CEREMONY. j The new works were opened at PaI tea on Tuesday, when about 450 lambs were kilied, and 600 sheep and 70 _ calves were in the yards awaiting killl' iiefore starting the killing, all those t woi-iiing about tne works were assemb- : [ed together to listen to a few Avords j from Mr W. D. Powdrell, chairman oi £ directors. j! Mr Powdrell paid a tribute to the k \ contractor, Mr Amoore, and his excely : lent staff, for the faithful way they had £ carried out their work, the works being { practically completed in four months^ j! which was a record in concrete builde ing. It showed there were no drones on . Mr Amcore's staff, and not a, single B ' dispute had arisen with any of the B many men employed by him. The works T tllomselv.es Avere a lasting monument J of good workmanship and energy. Mi j Powdrell also expressed a wish that s for the future the same good feeling _i would exist between him and his men t . a s had existed in . the past with. Mr t Amoore and his staff, and he thought 5 that the days of strikes were about t over o.ving to the power now being f placed in the men's hands by the secret t ballot, instead of -being in the hands of the agitator and -a few of his folj lowers. j' The Chairman mentioned the fact that the works had had a chequered k career. He said that the worker often . looked xipon the capitalist as his enemy, but the directors had stuck to the . company and were nmv guaranteeing [ or lending the company a, very large ( amount, and it was owing to the action , of the directors that the workers of la tea had had a good winter's work, . and now had a good summer's work in sight. ' After the men had expressed their good wishes cheers were given, and Mr Powdrell, the chairman, killed the first lamb and work commenced in earnest everything working perfectly. The architects for the works were Messrs Mitchell, of Wellington, and Dnffill, of Hawera, and the plans, together with the conveniences for •cheap handling, will compare favorably with those of any works in New Zeaiand
