Mr E. Wilson, Inspector of Police, was in Hawera on Wednesday.

The death is announced of Mr Hungerford Roche, one of the best known settlers in the Waikato. The deceased played an active part in the Maori war, having an appointment in the commissariat department in operations against the Raglan Maoris.

A Washington cablegram announces the death of Rear-Admiral Alfred lhayer Mahan,- whose writings on nanaval history and traditions, and power won for him world-wide recognition as an atithority on maritime questions. He was born at West Point in 1840, and entered the navy in 1856, being commissioned a lieutenant in 1885. He served throughout the war of secession and since -that time in the South Atlantic, Pacific, Asiatic, and European squadrons.
