How a Jewish non-commissioned offi- , cer named Katz, with seven comrades, stopped three German companies, each numbering about 250 men, and was promoted on the battlefield to the rank of sub-lieutenant and decorated with the Cross of St. George for his heroic act, iis related in the Octro Russili (The Dawn of Russia). On the ere of the battle of Gumbinnen. in East Prussia. Katz was sent with nine soldiers to the outposts. After it had become dark they heard the approach of a large German force, which proved to be three columns of infantry. Katz immediately sent two of his men with a report to his commander, and then opened fire on the (brermans. Not knowing the strength ot the- Russians, the Germans entrenched themselves and returned the fire, aeon the Russian soldiers' ammunition gave out, and then they made a bayonet charge. Two were killed, the others wounded, including Katz. who, when half conscious, heard a Russian Hurrah:' It was his regiment, which promptly charged- the enemy and compelled them to surrender
