PLUNKET NURSE SOCIETY
GARDEN FETE
The present is a time when there are many calls on the people. A magnificent response has been and is being made to the appeals made on behalf- • of distress-and want abroad. The needs of such a society as that founded by Lady Plunket some years ago, make an appeal necessary each year for funds to - carry on the work of endeavoring specially to educate mothers in the care of children, and also to giv.e a nurse's care to any in need of such assistance. The fine response given yesterday to the efforts of the committee that arranged for the garden fete at Ramanui, is therefore highly gratifying" to them and most serviceable because "it will provide' the main portion of the financial assistance required. The beautiful grounds of the Misses Good lend themselves admirably to such a function. To the Misses Good and Mrs Foyster, therefore, the Society are greatly indebted for their kindness. They spared no time nor effort in helpin o; in every possible way. Under the billing hands of some of the members. ' of the committee, stalls "were erected and stocked with work and produce of various kinds. These formed the nucleus of the whole scheme. Round them were grouped all the other attractions. There was a sheep guessing competition, a shooting gallery, a tent" for boxing and other competitions, where local "exponents of the "pillow-fistic" art displayed their science and showed form " good enough for the. 'spectators to"be- ' lievethey had found, at Jast "the white' - hope." Putting, and .quoits were in full swing on.the lawn; children rejoiced in sprinting up the green' sward just in ' front of the house; adults showed .their - skill in the, art of balancing a big egg " on a small spoon and doing a 50yds. race in record time; various birds andanimals were guided to the winning," post by their drivers in a. menagerie race, and' motor scorchers (in car or on cycle) showed their skill in several competitions. Prizes for all events- were very kindly presented, by business' people.
Good returns were shown in .all de--partments. - Towards the close of the day all goods unsold were nut under the hammer by Mr J. G. .Osborne, and realised very satisfactory amounts. The Society is indebted to him for his kindness.
So many willing -persons assisted j that it is' impossible to mention all. To those who presided at ,the' stalls, to the ladies and gentlemen .who ran the afternoon teg., the competitions, . the races,-the boxing tent and shootinggallery, and to all who in one way oranother assisted to make the affair-the success it undoubtedly was, *the. Society's committee are very grateful for - tho help so willingly given.
