CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A general meeting of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present—Messrs G. H. Buckeridge (in the chair), H. G. Carman, J. L. Weir, G. D. Gow, and O. E. Flyger. ger. GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN GOODS. A circular appeal was received from the Trade. Commissioner of New Zealand, stating that German and Austrian goods were toeing largely used in New Zealand, and asking the co-oper-ation of the Chamber in the purchase of English goods in preference to German goods. —-Received. TELEPHONE EXTENSION. A letter was received from the Post-master-General, stating that the extension of the telephone line between New Plymouth .and Stratford would relieve the congestion experienced at Eltham, which the Chamber complained or. —Received. FREIGHTS AND INSURANCE. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce wrote, stating that it had drafted a letter to the i Jrime Minister asking that reasonable rates for freight and insurance be secured. The letter referred to risks on shipments of wool, tallow, pelts, grain, sheepskins, and rabbitskinS. The letter also stated that it was definitely known that war risks were effected in London at 40 per cent., whilst the local rate was 100 per cent., which was grossly unfair.— Received. It was resolved that the next meeting be the quarterly meeting, and that the chairman should prepare a lecture for that meeting.
