PENNED IN A BURNING TRAIN

There was a terrible panic at Tohortkoff, situated at the foot of the Carpathians, when the Russians suddenly rained fire over the Austrian defenders. ■ A fierce artillery duel ensued on the surrounding ridges. The kihabitants thronged the railway sation, and as the conflict increased in deadliness many Austrian, soldiers and officers rushed to the station and evicted women and children from the train. Their plates were taken by panicstricken troops. As the train ascended the imnrntain a Russian shell smashed the locomotive as it was nearmg the summit, and the train rolled' down, crashing into a second one. Both were rapidly descending into the valley when a fresh shell fired tho carriages. The train continued to descend with the burning victims, crushing to death a hundred and throwning the remnants into the station. The Austrian army dispersed then and the town was occupied.
