DISTRESS RELIEF FUND.
Hawera has kept well abreast with other parts of the dominion in the. matter of, general patriotic and regimental funds, and is sure to do so with respect to the Distress Fund for the relief of the poor in Great Britain, Ireland and Belgium. It,.is with a view to this that a public meeting has been called for eight o'clock to-morrow night at the Borough Council Chambers. Mr R. W. Shallcrass, the general secretary for the Dominion, is to be present to explain fully the objects of* the fund, ; whkv like that of the Prince of Wales' Fund, in England, is very comprehensive in its scope in connection with distress due to the war. Distress in Belgium will be fully considered side by side with distress m Britain, but the relief will not, m any sense, be confined to Belgian cases of suffering. Naturally, the splendid stand made by Belgium against Germany, and the tremendous losses which she has suffered.in the process, have won for that country boundless admiration and sympathy, but in the case of the Relief Distress Fund, her people and those of Britain, who are common sufferers by the war, will b 6 treated with equal sympathy and assistance and Belgian cases will not be considered preferentially to British cases. In view of this, and of the need for all the help that can be given, the object of to-morrow night's meeting must appeal Jtroncrlv to the public, and there should be a full attendance.
