GENERAL OPERATIONS SATISFACTORY.

DESPERATE FIGHTING TO THE

NORTH

TOWNS ON THE BATTLE LINE

NOW SCENES OF BLACK DE-

STRUCTION

LONDON

Oct. 12

The Daily Mail's Paris correspondent reports that the desperate battle fought on Tuesday to the northwards was a brilliant success, the Germans being driven back for 13 miles, and losing 12,000 killed and wounded.

The Allied cavalry was greatly hampered by miles of hop gardens.

The Press Bureau publishes a communication from the French headquarters, which mentions that there was a lull in the operations on our immediate front pending the general advance at Arras.

The Germans are well supplied with artillery, .which was particularly violent on Tuesday and Wednesday, but with no success. The only place where they gained ground was at Roye, where the gains were not worth a tithe of the cost of men and material.

The towns on the battle line are no;v scenes of black destruction. Arr.-s has been wrecked, Albert is non-existent, and Douai has been half burned dcnvn.1

PARIS, Oct. 12

An official communique issued at midnight says: There is nothing fresh to report, except that a flag has been captured near Lassigny. The general operations' of the* day are satisfactory!
