WHAKAMARA.
At "the householders' meeting on Monday evening there was quite a large gathering. The usual routine of business was gone through, and a "ballot was taken for the five vacancies on the committee. There were ten nominations, and ■ the following were elected: Mesdames Catchpole and Murch, and Messrs 0. Crawford, A. J. Herbert, and J. R. Murch. Before vacating the chair the chairman said that he had a pleasant duty to perform. He wished to say a few words concerning the teacher, Mrs Anthony. The settlers had decided to give her a present as a slight token of their appreciation of her sterling qualities. It was customary to wait until people were leaving the district before telling them how much they valued them. But, he remarked, it was Whakamara's intentions to go one better than that, and they (the settlers) were going to tell her what they thought of her that night, and to ask her to accept their present and their sincere thanks for the way she Jiad conducted. the school; also to express the hope "that they would long nave her amongst them, and that her name would be coupled with the school's . destiny for many years 'to come. He then asked Mr Murch to make the presentation, which took the form of a silver teapot and sugar bowl, suitably inscribed. Mrs Anthony, in responding, said it had come as a great surprise to her. She had always done her best for the school, and her heart was in her work. She was glad to see that her efforts were appreciated, and she thanked them very much. The meeting then closed, and the new committee met to elect a chairman. Mr 0. Crawford was elected chairman and secretary, and Mr Herbert treasurer.
