HAWKE'S BAY RACES,
A RED LETTER DAY

HASTINGS, May 6. Heavy rain fell last night, with the result that going at the first day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's autumn meeting will be heavy. This morning broke dull and threatening, but the weather is now clearing, and the prospects are for a. fine day. To-day is a red letter day in the" history of the turf in this district, the occasion being the opening of the Jockey Club's neAv buildings, including a grandstand with seating for 1500, officers' stand, tea kiosk and totalisator house, which have been erected at a cost of £35,000. The appointments are now as up-to-date as any in the Dominion. A record attendance is anticipated. The Government will be represented at the opening ceremony by the Hon. W. Fraser (Minister of Public Works) and the Hon. H. D. Bell (Minister for Internal Affairs). A contingent representing both branches of the Legislature also will be present. Results :'—
Maiden Hack Race.—Rigo Park 1, Hymen 2, Munje 3. Scratched: Aviation, Ornanawo, King's Host, Elevonia. Black Powder. Won by two lengths. Time Imin 18sec. Longlands Hurdles.—Cousin Jack 1, Lamsdorff 2, Papalitz 3. Scratched: Golden Water. Won easily. Time 3min 49 1-osec. Okahu fell at the last jump. Porangahau Handicap.—Valhalla 1, Lady Louisa 2, Day Fly 3. Scratched: Adroit and Sauci. Won by a length. Time Imin 25sec.
