KAPONGA TOWN BOARD.

(From Our Own Correspondent^

At the monthly meeting of this Board were present Commissioners A. H. Guy (chairman), Betts, Death, and Law.

The Eltham County Council wrote agreeing to pay half cost of erection of a pound up to £25, conditionally on their receiving half net/ revenue from the pound.

It was resolved to agree to this offer and to call tenders for the necessary work immediately, the present tenant of the pound section to be advised of the Board's intention, and that Mr J. W. Harrison's price for providing the necessary tolls-board be accepted. Mr G. Melville complained of the pollution of a stream in his property through the Board's rubbish tip being in the stream. —The Foreman 'reported he had been unable to obtain the mould to make the pipes required to be put in to allay the nuisance.—Resolved that prices of the pipes be ascertained, and if satisfactory, that the Town Clerk order the requisite number from Waitara.

The Fire Brigade's request to have the water pressure gauge shifted to the fire brigade station was agreed to. A suggestion from the same source that a platform should be provided in the Town Hall for picture machinery to prevent obstruction of a door was held over sending an estimate of the cost and the opinion of the picture proprietors being obtained. The Board's solicitor advised that Dr A. H. Tov.ey's application for a rebate of rates on the ground of nonoccupancy should not be entertained. —Resolved that Dr Tovey be advised as to the solicitor's opinion. A communication from the Justice Department promising further consideration of the Board's request for stationing a. constable in Kaponga was received.

The Foreman was instructed not to metal the approaches to any culverts in future without first obtaining in writing . from the owner a statement that all material used in bo doing would be paid for by him (the owner). The scouring of the footpath at the junction of Messrs Mills and Wickham's properties on the Eltham road, by the surface water from the former, was drawn attention to. —The Foreman was directed to arrange with Mr Mills to provide the necessary pipes to lav and that the path be filled in to th§ correct level.

The Chairman reported having attended a deputation to the Hon. Mr Herries re railway matters, with results alread- known to the Board.

Resolved that, concrete kerbing and channelling be p_ut in from Mr L. Hill's premises on the Eltham. road, round the corner to Mr-L. Wickham's southern boundary on the. Manaia road; ratepayers concerned to meet half the cost. »

The Oddfellows' Lodge wrote enquiring whether the Board intended doing anything -in the matter of electric light eunplv.—Resolved that the Chairman and Town Clerk obtain all possible information, etc., on the matter and report to the next meeting of the Board, and thai the Oddfellows' Lodge be advised of the action being taken.

It was decided that a notice be erected forbidding the putting of any seats outside the Town Hall building on the occasion of dances; also that in future all hall hires be payable in advance and that the sum of 5s be added to all charges, refundable in the event of the hall being cleaned up to the custodian's satisfaction.

The Foreman reported that the work for the month had included the cleaning of water tables on main roads.' In addition a number of culverts had been put in. and other work of a general nature attended to. A meeting to further consider the revision of the by-laws was arranged for the following Tuesday evening.

Accounts amounting to £300 were passed for payment.
