THE MAYORALTY.

In connection with the Mayoralty election to-morrow, the advertised address of Mr Whittington and the speech of Mr Dixon given last night, have put before the ratepayers the claims on their attention by the respective candidates. Both have served Hawera in local public matters for a good many years, and each for the work he has done has strong claims upon the gratitude and confidence of the people.,Mr Whittington has for a long time been a thoroughly good practical member of the Council,, and so. far as regards the administration and works departments is a well informed and. well tried man, who may be relied on to see. that borough, affairs are well administered. Mr Dixon, though, he has not had experience of purely municipal work, has taken a good deal! of interest in it, as in all other borough activity. As member of the Chamber of Commerce, and in a variety of other ways he has done excellent work; and as a member of the Education Board, taking a larger field, he has shown initiative, enthusiasm and tenacity of purpose which has been of great practical advantage to the borough, and the district at large. There appears to be no difference of policy between; the two candidates. The only immediate work; before the Mayor and Council is that of seeing that the best possible return is secured for the rather considerable amount of money which has been placed' at their disposal for bringing the town up to date in respect of streets and footpaths and sanitation. It is for the ratepayers to balance the past services of the candidates and the value of their -experience as a measure of their future usefulness in the interests of the town. Ether will make a very good Mayor.
