A STIFF PENALTY.

AUCKLAND, April 27. Recently a member of the crew of the pleasure yacht Rawene was fined £6 and costs for picking oysters out of ■season. The Rawene' was not seized hy the Customs Department, as her owner, Mr Gifford, undertook to hand the yacht over should the Department require him to do so. Later Mr Gifford was informed that the Minister of Customs had imposed a fine of £50 upon the owner of the yacht as an alternative to confiscation of the vessel. Mr Gifford paid the fine, but local yachtsmen are reported to be moving jn the matter of asking for remission •of the fine, and Mr Gifford will probably take action to test the legality of the proceedings.
