INTERESTING INCIDENTS

(Received April 25, 8.10 a.m.)

LONDON, April 24. Vera Cruz telegrams describe a dramatic incident when the crews of the British cruisers Essex and Berwick lined the decks and cheered the American landing force, and when the American dead were carried in boats the flags of the British ships were lowered to half-mast. British officers express unstinted admiratidn for the perfection of the organisation in the landing of the Ameri- ■ cans. There was a curious incident in connection with the capture of five hun•dred Mexicans, who were evidently convinced that the Americans were following the Mexican custom and intended "their immediate execution. They volubly protested their innocence, and were intensely surprised and relieved Tvhen they learnt they would only be placed on a warship.
