OBGAN RECITAL.
At the Presbyterian Church on Friday evening Mr A. C. Webb, theorganist, gave his first recital in Hawera. He had chosen a good programme, comprising selections from the works of th© old and of the modern masters, well calculated to. show to advantage the fine quality ©f the organ and ite beautiful combina+l ons«£ f His best number was the "Daybreak". (W. T. Spinney), m which the organist was at hia best, playing each movement with good taste and using the stops at his com- > mand both in good combination and 4 «n° a -\ n o eff««*iv® contrast. Lohr'a bondola Song" opens with a lovely movement on the soft stops of th* trrdat Organ, and in the next there* is a fine oboe eolo. The "Elegie* (Lemare) introduced a fine melody in the bass with 'cello effect. In " the *ranck "Andantiho" there are someioyely movements, which were played with a. nice sense of the beauty of the> work. The third movement was verr good indeed. The Wagner-Liszt exv^tit^?6^ 11 or 6an arrangement V* Mr Webb himself: A fitting finale to the recital was the well-known an* «timng offertoire in D minor (Batiste)* played with fine dignity and in very §£<>d taeje. Mr Webb was assisted l>y Miss loung. who sang with very net ?5TV h? &**s air rom th« Elijah. "0, Rest in tfie Lord," and by Mr Ackroyd, who also selected his "sola* Vn from the Elijah, "It is enough,'* and "Lord God of Abraham." IT! is understood—and with this ™ r?*T*TV I °* general approval—that Mr Webb intends this to be the first of a series of recitals on the organ, justly termed "The King of Instru- h ments." Now that Hawera has two ft? 1? 6 oreans and will shortly havea third, there will be scope for much organ music, which in majiy a city has become quite a feature' of civic life.
