HOTEL IN FLAMES

AUCKLAND, March 16. A fire was discovered in the Shakespeare Hotel at midnight. The flames burst through the floor of an attic occupied by two waitresses. About thirty persons - were sleeping in the hotel, in addition to the licensee and staff. All escaped in their night attire. When the brigade arrived the flames had burst through the hotel roof, but were suppressed within a quarter of an hour. Much damage was done, but chiefly by water.
