NEW AND OLD MErHQDS. BY TBI.EGRAT>H— r PRESS tBHOOIATION. DUNEDIN^ March 13. Mr J. H. EstelL Commercial Superintendent of the Port of London Authority, addressed the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon on the subject of trade with London. In the course of his address he referred to the conditions of loading frozen meat at the New Zealand ports. He said the meat was just «s likely to get damaged in loading as in unloading, and if the authorities in London were prepared to perfect the arrangements for unloading and handling, he thought the people should look" into the whole question of loading at this end. At several ports in the Dominion, meat and other produce had to be barged to ships in the roadsteads, and canvas slings were used to lift the meat from the barges to the steamers. While the London authorities were U3ing electric elevators and endless chain conveyors to discharge the meat in London, the New Zealand authorities were using in many cases old-fashioned slings, which had been practically discarded in London. Mr Estell also mentioned that members of the London Authority received no salary nor fees, the revenue going towards improving the facilities at the port.
