THE UNITED STATES.

"PERIOD OF SPLENDID ISOLATION.^ BY CABLE—PSESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 According to fairly well informed press reports. President Wilson feels that the Unitgd States is now reaching the gravest stage regarding Mexico, in view of the serious differences between the United States and Britain over the tolls question, the ; dispute with" Japan over the ' anti= ■alien question, with Columbia over the Panama secession, and with Russia over th« Jewish question. The press points out that the United States is now facing a period of splendid isolation, as Britain formerly did. The Senators conferring with President Wilson admit that" if Japan" is likely at any time to go to war with the United States over the Californian difficulty she will "most probably do so when the United States is ' embroiled with Mexico and seriously at loggerheads with the rest of the civilised world.
