Mr Wesche, general manager of th« Femnsular and Oriental Company, cone ijS r Pres6nt 31 days' mail service could be shortened to a certain extent, but only if an extra subsidy is paid for the increased speed and bunker capacity needed. This extra bunker space would curtail: the space availaole for cargo, lhe reduction of Australian terminal rates, and the wider employment of wireless were amongst the suggestions tor reducing cable charges.
