Otherwise the damage in the town itself was of. no great -moment, though in the country .distrusts farmers reported numerous cases of outbuildings, especially those "V- an and worse-for-wear condition, being demolished. The Kaponga Tradesmen's Association consiaered the request of a number ot shopkeepers that shops should be dosed irom Wednesday till Monday at Christmas at a general meeting during the week. The proposition was lost by one vote. A renly was also received from the Underwriters' Association that they would not consider a reduction of the insurance rates 'in Kaponga, which in view of the town now possessing a water supply and equipped fire brigade had been applied for. On the other hand, the State Office has intimated its readiness to make a reduction if the other offices will agree to fall in line. There the. matter remains..

Mr A. Coffey;'' -of Eltham, and- his company of dramatic students favored us with a visit recently, and creditably presented a drama and a short comedy. In addition to Mr and Miss Coffey those who took leading parts were Messrs C. Carncross, W. H. McAlpine, and M. Murray. The performers showed, no little. ability and merit. ' The building trade has been fairly brisk round Kaponga of late, all the local-contractors being, fully occupied. Mr C. S. Walker has commenced the re-erection : of Dr. Tovey's residence, which was recently destroyed by fire, the new building being considerably more extensive than the old one. Mr A; H. Thomas is hiving erected an up-to-date bungalow residence on the Manaia road.' Both these buildings will, when completed, be a credit to the architecture of ■ the township.'
